Yes, it's certainly May and time to get back at this blog. It's been more than two weeks since I last looked at any postcards. I 've received lots of cards in that time, so there's no problem selecting a few to highlight here.
Let's start with one from India. It's a card showing the Pushkar Camel Fair, an annual five day camel and livestock fair held in the town of Pushkar. It is one of the world's largest camel fairs - some even say the largest. More than 11,000 camels, horses and cattle gather in Pushkar and the fair is visited by over 400,000 people every year.
Nagi used a couple of stamps on his card. On the left is 1 of 6 animal stamps issued in 2015 for the 3rd India - Africa Forum Summit.
The middle stamp, also from 2015, commemorates the Golden Jubilee of the Border Security Force. Lastly, it's a couple of definitives from 2016 featuring Bal Gangadhar Tilak.
A post office is the subject of my next card. It's the post office in Nuwara Eliya, Sri Lanka and it's one of the oldest post offices in the country. It's a Victorian style red brick building dating back to 1894.
David used a couple nice topical stamps for those who collect Birds or Crocs - the animal not the shoe. On the left is a stamp , issued for World Post Day 2016, featuring a Pigeon. On the right is a stamp , 1 of 7, featuring Kumana National Park.
A Helmut Newton inspired card is next. Newton was a German Australian fashion photographer whose provocative, erotically charged black and white photos were a mainstay of Vogue. My card shows one of Newton's photos from 1976 called " Bergstrom over Paris " .
Carla, who recently attended a Newton exhibition, used a couple of stamps from 2007 featuring Famous People. On the left , a stamp honouring Opera Singer Beniamino Gigli and on the right , one featuring Italian Actor Amedeo Nazzari.
The 4th card for today is a 3D card from Ireland. It features 5 famous Irish Writers and a quote from each. Shown is Samuel Beckett, James Joyce, Bram Stoker, Oscar Wilde and William Butler Yeats. I really like Oscar Wilde's " I can resist everything except temptation " and Yeats' " There are no strangers here; Only friends you haven't yet met " . Ireland is renowned as the land of Saints and scholars and Irish writers are studied in university classes around the world.
This card arrived from Anne Marie, a Virtual Tourist living in Ireland. She used 2 Christmas Stamps , one from 2008 and one from 2015.
Now it's back to the other side of the world for a postcard - Belize. It's the 4500th postcard that I have received to date.
Here you can see Hawksworth Bridge, a one lane suspension bridge over the Macal River in San Ignacio , Belize. It was built in 1949 in England and imported to Belize.
Jessica , a Postcrosser from Belize sent this card. That makes me a little lucky as there are only 15 Postcrossers in the country and only about 8 or 9 are currently active. This card is #836 of cards sent from Belize through Postcrossing. The stamp used is from a 2005 Ecology set of 12 definitives.
I'm going to close out this edition of the blog with one more Newfoundland card postmarked in Salvage, Newfoundland. Salvage is a small village of around 240 people located at the tip of the Eastport Peninsula in Bonavista Bay, Newfoundland. It is a very scenic town, once named as one of Canada's prettiest towns. It was originally inhabited by the Beothuks, and then by Basque fishermen in the early 17th century., making it one of the oldest continually inhabited communities in North America. On the postcard we see lines and floats hung out to dry at the end of a busy lobster fishing season.
The card arrived with a nice clear Salvage circular cancellation. The stamp is 1 of 5 Opera themed stamps issued this year. It features Adrianne Pieczonka.
That's it for this time. Thanks for cards go out to Nagi, David, Carla, Anne Marie, Jessica and the Salvage Postmaster. Thanks yo you for dropping by and reading till the end. Take care.
