Cards From Lay Hoon, David, Julia, Ekaterina, Alice, Leslie and her Dad, Jobbo, Dominique Rasa and Cecile

I'm back with another postcard update. Today, it's a big selection from a lot of places, none of which are mentioned in the title of today's blog. Those are today's card senders. Nice to see your name in lights sometimes, well maybe not lights, but you get the drift. Here we go .

First up is a card from Cambodia, just my second card from that country. I only wish there were more, so if you're going there or live there, keep me in mind. Lay Hooh's card shows The Bayon, a well-known and richly decorated temple at  Angkor in Cambodia. It was built in the late 12th or early 13th centuries. The Bayon's most distinctive feature  is the total of 216 serene and massive stone faces on its many towers. It has been described  "as the most striking expression of the baroque style as contrasted with the classical style of Angkor Wat.".

Lay Hoon used a stamp issued in 2014. It is 1 of a set of 4 showcasing Traditional Khmer Dances.

Lay Hoon has a great postcard blog called Travel Postcard. You can check it our  here .

That's one down with a number to go.

Start spreading the news, I'm leaving today
I want to be a part of it, New York, New York ------------ Words by John Kander and Fred Ebb
                                                                                              Sung by Frank Sinatra

That's the first thing that came to mind when I found David's New York card in my mail. I couldn't get the song out of my head for the rest of the day. The card is a great aerial view of New York City showing the Hudson River , the East River  and Battery Park.

David used a number of Batman stamps issued in 2014. The U.S. issued a total of 8 different Batman stamps, 4 with different Bat symbols and 4 different Batman action stamps.

If I recall correctly, back in 2013 I sent David a card from Canada and used a number of Superman stamps on it. Both were Great Heroes but only one is Superman. . Take care, David.
Oh yes, be sure to have a look at David's fine postcard blog of his travels. It's called "Postcards A World Travelogue " and you can find it  here .

Now for a wonderful card, a Classic in my book . It's a SAS Douglas DC-3  in flight. SAS operated 60 of these aircraft from 1946 - 1965. Here are a few stats for the DC-3 --- Wing span 28.96 m. Length 19.65 m. Cruising speed 295 kn/h. max takeoff weight 12.2 tonnes. Crew 4, Number of seats 28. This particular aircraft SE- CFP has a varied history - It was built as C-47A 43-30732 and delivered to USAAF on 10/5/43, and assigned to Oran, Algeria on 11/20/43. On 2/20/44 it was transferred to the U.S. 9th A.F., and then returned to the USA on 9/23/45. One month later it was with the Reconstruction Finance Corp and subsequently went to Canadair Ltd in Montreal. On 9/12/46 it was sold as LN-IAF to Det Norske Luftfartselskap AS and based in Norway. It was then transferred to the Scandinavian Airlines System on 8/1/48. The plane was leased to Linjeflyg of Sweden as SE-CFP on 8/13/57, then on 6/29/60 it was sold to the Royal Swedish Air Force as 79006 and base with F7 WIng. In 1978 it was with the 13th Wing coded “76.” The plane was then re-registered as SE-CFP on 6/26/84 with Stiftelsen Flygande Veteraner. Many DC-3's are still flying, this one still was as of August 2011.

Julia used a varied selection of postage on this card. I don't know if the longer item on top is a stamp or just a label for bpost - the Belgian company responsible for the delivery of national and international mail. The smaller stamp on the left is 1 of 10 in a 2015 Greetings booklet called What's In A Name. The stamp on the right is a recent definitive featuring King Philip. Interestingly the cancel on all items just says "Collect - Brussel X / Bruxelles X ". Johan, perhaps you might be able to elaborate on this for us .

That last card is another winner for my Airlines / Aircraft Postcard Collection. This next card will also be a part of that collection. It's a Vogue cover from July 1, 1941 showing a lady flyer climbing aboard her aircraft. It arrived from Novosibirsk, located in southwestern  Siberia, Russia.   In 1941 Vogue coast just 35 cents , 40 cents in Canada.

Ekaterina or Kate used a couple of  somewhat older stamps here. On the left though is a 2013 stamp , 1 of 4 issued for the Sochi Olympics. The middle stamp , from 2006, features M.A. Vrubel's The Swan Princess , painted in 1900. The stamp on the right, also a painting , was issued in 2009. It is a self-portrait by Russian artist Zinaida Serebriakova.

Here's a black & white card from Elvas, Portugal, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 30 June 2012. The card is a photo of a lady out for a stroll. It is by Maricruz Suarez.

Alice used a 2014 stamp commemorating 800 Years of Notaries.

Up next is a group of 4 postcards picked up at the Pima Air & Space Museum in Tucson, Arizona, U.S.A. The museum has nearly 300 aircraft spread over 80 acres. Of course the 4 cards all show aircraft, more specifically military aircraft. The first one is a Boeing B52 Bomber, the Stratofortress.

.
Next is a Convair B-58 Hustler, the first supersonic Air Force bomber.

Then we have a Lockheed P-38 H Lightning. During World War II , the Germans called this aircraft the "Fork Tail Devil ".

The last of this group is the Boeing B-29 Superfortress.

A really nice set of aircraft postcards, thanks to Leslie in Ankara, Turkey, with the help of her Dad in the U.S. They all arrived with the same stamp, the 2014 Global Sea Temperatures round self adhesive.

Leslie has a postcard blog that's worth checking out. You can see it right here .

Well I think that's about enough for this time. I didn't get to the cards from Jobbo or Dominique. I have 2 from Jobbo and 4 from Dominique . They will be front and center next time, along with the card from Rasa and the one from Cecile.

Thanks for today's cards go our to Lay Hoon, David, Julia, Kate, Alice and Leslie and her Dad. Great cards everybody, don't know what I'd be doing if people like you didn't fill my mailbox. Really appreciate you all. Thanks again.

Hello Glenn,

The stamp on top is from I believe a serie of 10 self-adhesive stamps named "Sunset";used alone it's for inside Belgium.
In this format you can make a mystamp with a picture you can upload.
The cancel is the latest one wich you get when you post cards/envelopes in the postoffice / postbox in Brussels / Flemish Brabant / Walloon Brabant.
Everything goes to the sorting center of Brussel X.

Greetings,Johan
