New Country # 182
Today I received 3 postcards from Cape Verde, increasing my country collection to 182. The cards were sent by Kaka Babroza, a blogger in Cape Verde. The Republic of Cape Verde is located in the North Atlantic Ocean, off the western coast of Africa. The islands were discovered in the fifteenth century and attained independence in 1975. Cape Verde is named after Cap Vert in Senegal, the westernmost point of continental Africa. The cards received showcase Sao Vicente, Maio and Fogo, 3 of the 10 main islands that make up Cape Verde. Fogo is the only one of the islands to have an active volcano. It's last eruption was April 3 , 1995 and it covered the island with a cloud of ash. Many residents were evacuated as their homes were destroyed. Mount Fogo is the highest peak of Cape Verde, at 2829 metres above sea level.
The stamp that Kaka used is a 2007 issue showing the eruption of Mount Fogo.
More tomorrow.
